CHAPTER FIFTEEN

JESSE

Traveling through a portal is like going over the hump of a rollercoaster and feeling your stomach lurch upward as gravity takes hold. It doesn’t exactly make me nauseous, but it’s not a good feeling either.

I peek out the slit of the thick canvas tent flap and wish it was dark. It’s not. There’s another hour or two of light, at least.

So, in broad daylight, I have to slip out of here undetected, gather my bearings, and merge with the body of students without drawing attention.

The good thing about it being dusky-light outside is that maybe I can spot Wyatt and we can make a break before the icebreaker event even begins.

Shuffling sounds outside the tent have me backtracking and—Crap—There is nowhere to hide. I step to the side of the door and hope whoever is coming doesn’t come in here.

If he does, maybe he won’t notice me.

Ha! Fat chance.

A hand splits the canvas door and I’m about to get company when a second voice calls out. “Branston, I hear your boy is on deck this week.”

The shuffling of feet stops outside, and I recheck the tent for possible places to become invisible.

“He is. He’ll give the others one hell of a run, too. He’s a natural, my Chad.”

“I bet that’s true. What can I do for you? Do you need something from provisions?”

“Uh, no. Just stretching my legs.”

“Good, then maybe you can help me at the tables. They’re coming out now.”

“Of course. Lead the way.”

I strain to follow their footsteps as they head off, thankful for whoever saved my bacon. There’s a rising hum of chatter building outside, and based on what the savior guy said, I assume it’s the boys coming out from their pre-wargame dinner.

Dad said there’s always a big banquet to welcome eligible alumni heirs before the icebreaker. I hope they stuffed their bellies and are slow out of the gate.

I’ll take any advantage I can get out here.

After waiting a few more minutes, I peek outside. The tent opens out to an open alley, and, as my luck would have it, there is nobody out there for me to blend in with.

Yay me. I slip out and move as quickly and quietly as I can toward the commotion up ahead.

“You!” someone calls from right behind me.

I fight the urge to run. Instinct tells me if I make a break for it, I’ll be busted before I even start. Instead, I turn and meet the scowl of a juggernaut of a man with dark, buzzed hair. “What are you doing back here?”

“I, uh… needed to piss and stepped away. Sorry.” I remember to drop my voice, and I flick my head forward to let my bangs hide my face a bit.

“Who popped you one?” he asks, pointing at the bruise on my eye.

I’ve only been a guy for ten minutes, but I know that ‘my mom’ is the wrong answer. “Cracked it on a gnarly rock jut when I was climbing the other day.”

“Oh yeah,” he says, eyeing me closer.
